The Fatherhood Mandate
What happens when becoming a father is no longer a choice?
Sam Maxwell is looking forward to graduating from college and getting on with his life. Then a summons to Family Court informs him that his ex-girlfriend is pregnant, he’s the presumed biological father, and the embryo has been appointed a ward of the state.
Under Wisconsin’s Unborn Child Protection Act, Sam’s responsibilities begin before the child is born. His movements are restricted, his athletic scholarship is threatened, and decisions that once belonged to him are suddenly subject to court order.
Then one bad decision crosses a line the court has drawn, leaving Sam facing criminal charges for a child that may not even be his.
The Fatherhood Mandate asks what happens when reproductive control doesn't stop with the person who's pregnant.
