Thin Blue Lines

What happens when your body becomes the state’s business?

Rylee Williams thought breaking up with her on-again, off-again boyfriend would bring peace. Instead, dizzy spells, nausea, and a positive pregnancy test put her under the authority of Wisconsin’s Unborn Child Protection Act.

Originally passed in 1997, the law allows the state to intervene in pregnancies it considers “at risk.” In Rylee’s world, that authority has expanded. She’s monitored, evaluated, and stripped of basic freedoms because the embryo inside her has rights the state is increasingly willing to enforce.

Thin Blue Lines is what happens when control begins masquerading as care.
